On this day in 1997, LL Cool J released his seventh studio album Phenomenon on Def Jam. The album was executively produced by Sean "Puffy" Combs and featured mostly in-house production from his team of producers The Hitmen. The album spawned a few top 100 hits and five singles. The title track "Phenomenon," which peaked at #55 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #16 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart. "4, 3, 2, 1," which reached #75 on the Hot 100 and #24 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart. The song featured Canibus and is most notable for being the track to kickstart their beef. The single "Father" hit #18 on the Billboard Hot 100, #12 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart and #1 on the Rap chart. Other singles on the album were "Hot Hot Hot" and "Candy." Phenomenon reached #7 on the Billboard 200 and #4 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart. It was certified platinum.

On this day in 1992, Nas, under the moniker Nasty Nas, released his debut single "Halftime" on Ruffhouse. The single was produced by Large Professor. It contained samples from "Schoolboy Crush" by Average White Band, "Soul Traveling" by Gary Byrd, and "Dead End" by Japanese Hair.
"Halftime" was originally recorded for the soundtrack album to the film Zebrahead. The song was later included on Nas's debut album Illmatic in 1994.

Jello Biafra's spoken-word performance "Words from Our Sponsors" was sampled for the opening track along with Black Sabbath, hinting at Ice-T's future metal band Body Count. The hard-hitting third album spawned three singles: "Lethal Weapon," "What Ya Wanna Do?," and "You Played Yourself." The album reached #37 on the Billboard 200. It reached #11 on the R&B chart.
