On this day in hip-hop history, Kanye West released his second studio album Late Registration.
On this day in 2005, Kanye West released his second studio album Late Registration on Def Jam. The album was produced in collaboration with Jon Brion. It featured many guests from Brandy to Adam Levine to Jay Z. Together they spawned five singles, including the Grammy-winning "Diamonds from Sierra Leone," and the platinum-selling #1 single "Gold Digger" which spent nine weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and was Kanye's first #1. Late Registration reached #1 on the Billboard 200 and began Kanye's streak of six consecutive #1 hits. In total, West earned eight Grammy nominations including a nomination for album of the year and record of the year. He won three; best rap solo performance, best rap song, and best rap album. Also on this day... 1994 - UGK released their second studio album Super Tight... on Jive. 2012 - American music industry executive and co-founder of the label Violator, Chris Lighty passed away. 2015 - Nicki Minaj performed with Taylor Swift at the VMAs.

On this day in 1995, Junior M.A.F.I.A. released their debut studio album Conspiracy on Undeas. The Brooklyn rap group, led by the Notorious B.I.G., debuted to much acclaim. Conspiracy debuted at #8 on the Billboard 200. It reached #2 on the R&B chart and sold 69,000 copies in the first week. The album was certified gold. Junior M.A.F.I.A.'s debut included a few hit singles such as "Player's Anthem," which reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified gold. "Get Money" peaked at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum. The single "ATLiens" reached #35 on the Billboard Hot 100, and "Jazzy Belle" reached #52 on the same chart. The hip-hop duo's second album debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the R&B chart.
