On this day in 2000, Outkast released their fourth album Stankonia on LaFace. The album was produced by Earthtone III and Organized Noize. It became the group's mainstream pop breakthrough album and featured longtime collaborators Cee-Lo Green, Erykah Badu, Sleepy Brown, and the recording debut of Atlanta artist Killer Mike. The album spawned three major hit singles: "B.O.B.," and "Ms. Jackson," both reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and "So Fresh, So Clean," which peaked at #30 on the Hot 100. It debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold the first week selling 530,000 copies. The group earned five Grammy nominations for Stankonia and won two for best rap album and best rap performance by a duo or group for "Ms. Jackson."

On this day in 1990, Monie Love released her debut album Down to Earth on Warner Bros. The album featured production by Native Tongues' the Beatnuts and Jungle Brothers, Jerry Callendar, Andy Cox, Richie Fermie, David Steele, and Dancin' Danny D. Down to Earth spawned a handful of singles in addition to the title track, including "Ring My Bell," "Grandpa's Party," "I Can Do This," "Monie in the Middle," which was nominated for a Grammy, and "It's A Shame (My Sister)," which peaked at #26 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album reached #26 on the R&B charts.

On this day in 1991, Ice Cube released his second solo album Death Certificate on Priority. The album was produced by Sir Jinx. It is, at large, considered a masterpiece. The album was thematic and touched on an array of subjects like racism, police brutality, sexual promiscuity and diseases, and gang violence. Dr. Khalid Muhammad, then the national representative for the Nation of Islam, appeared as a guest on several tracks. Death Certificate's story was told on two sides. Side one was "The Death Side" and side two was "The Life Side." The sequential arrangement of the final three tracks on "The Death Side" is considered some of the best sequencing in recorded music history. The album spawned a couple hit singles "True to the Game" and "Steady Mobbin'," which peaked at #1 on the charts. Death Certificate debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the R&B chart. It was certified platinum within two months.

On this day in 1997, Ma$e released his debut album Harlem World on Bad Boy. The album featured production by the Neptunes, Jermaine Dupri, Dame Grease, Mo-Suave-A, and Puff Daddy's Hitmen crew. Notable guests featured on the album included DMX, L.O.X., Kelis, Lil' Kim, 8Ball & MJG, 112, Jay Z, Busta Rhymes, Puff Daddy and more. The debut set spawned the hits "Feels So Good," "Lookin' at Me," and "What You Want." All three reached the top ten on Billboard's Hot 100, R&B, and Rap charts. Harlem World debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 and the R&B chart. The album was nominated for the Grammy for Best Rap Album. On this day in 1985, the motion picture Krush Groove was released in US theaters. The film was directed and produced by Michael Schultz and was a semi-autobiographical account of the life of rap mogul Russell Simmons. Actor Blair Underwood played the Def Jam founder in his feature debut. Krush Groove starred R&B singer and percussionist Shelia E., along with future rap legends like Run-D.M.C., Kurtis Blow, the Beastie Boys, the Fat Boys, Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde, and a then sixteen-year-old LL Cool J. The soundtrack to the film peaked at #79 on the Billboard 200. It reached #14 on the R&B chart. The film grossed over $11 million.
