On this day in 1994, New York's own, The Notorious B.I.G. released his debut album Ready to Die on Bad Boy. It was the debut album for Sean "Puffy" Combs's Bad Boy label. The album would become certified multi-platinum. It featured production from a few producers but only one guest artist, Method Man, on the track "The What." The multi-platinum album spawned three classic smash hits: the Grammy-nominated, certified platinum-selling "Big Poppa," the certified platinum-selling "One More Chance," and the certified gold-selling "Juicy." Ready to Die reached #15 on the Billboard 200 and #3 on the R&B chart.

On this day in 1995, Kool G Rap released his debut solo album 4,5,6 on Cold Chilln'. It was his first release since disbanding with DJ Polo and his last on Cold Chillin'. Production on the album featured work by Buckwild, Dr. Butcher, T-Ray, Naughty Shorts, and Salaam Remi. Guest artists featured on the album included MF Grimm, B-1, and Nas. 4,5,6 produced a few hit singles including "Fast Life" which featured Nas and reached #74 on the Billboard Hot 100, "It's A Shame," and "4,5,6." The album itself peaked at #24 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the Rap and R&B charts.

On this day in 2001, Jay Z released his sixth album The Blueprint on Roc-A-Fella. Despite the album being untimely released on the day of the terrorist attack, The Blueprint sold over 420,000 copies it's first week and soon certified multi-platinum. The album featured production by Just Blaze, Timbaland, Eminem, and a young Kanye West. The set featured three smash hits that all reached the top ten on the charts, including the Kanye produced joint "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)." The Blueprint featured Eminem as its only guest artist.

On this day in the year 2000, New York rap duo M.O.P. released their single "Ante Up (Robbing-Hoodz Theory)" on Loud. The track was produced by DR Period and was a minor hit in the US but the remix was a top ten pop hit in the UK. "Ante Up" was the breakthrough song off of M.O.P.'s Warriorz album which was released a month later along with a remix that featured Busta Rhymes, Teflon, and Remy Ma. The song reached #19 on the Rap chart.

On this day in 1992, Bushwick Bill of the Geto Boys released his debut solo album Little Big Man on Rap-A-Lot. The album chronicled the 1991 shooting incident in which he lost an eye. Little Big Man reached #32 on the Billboard 200 and #15 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It spawned the single "Ever So Clear," which reached the top fifty on the R&B chart and #1 on the Rap chart.

On September 7, 1996, at the age of 25, Tupac Shakur was fatally shot in Las Vegas. 2Pac had just attended the Mike Tyson-Bruce Seldon heavyweight fight at the MGM Grand. He was riding with Suge Knight when a vehicle pulled up alongside them and shot 2Pac multiple times. Pac was transported to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada where he was placed on life support. He passed away 6 days later from his wounds on September 13.
