On July 12, 2005, Grand Hustle Records released the soundtrack to the motion picture Hustle & Flow to let the world know how hard it was out there for a pimp.
The album featured mostly artists from the South, like, T.I., 8-Ball & MJG, and Juvenile. The film's star, actor Terrance Howard appeared on the album as the film's character Djay. The soundtrack spawned a couple hit singles, including "I'm A King" by P$C featuring T.I., and Lil Scrappy, and "Bad Bitch (Remix)," which peaked at #48 on the R&B charts. The album reached #30 on the Billboard 200. The song "Hard Out Here For A Pimp" by Three 6 Mafia won an Academy Award for best original song. Also on this day... 2005- Bow Wow released his fourth studio album Wanted on Columbia.

On this day in hip-hop, Shaggy released his third studio album, Boombastic.
On this day in 1995, Jamaican rapper Shaggy released his third studio album, Boombastic, on Virgin. Already a huge talent in Europe, this album would have major success in the US. It spawned a number of hit singles, including the lead track "In the Summertime," which reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum. The title track would peak at #3 on the same chart and spent one week at #1 on the US R&B chart.
Boombastic reached the top forty of the Billboard 200. The album also won a Grammy in 1996 for best reggae album. Also on this day... 1997- Timbaland and Magoo released the single "Up Jumps da Boogie" on Atlantic 2006- Pimp C released his sophomore album Pimpalation on Rap-A-Lot.
On this day in 1988, N.W.A. released their single, "Straight Outta Compton" on Ruthless.
Hip-hop would never be the same after July 10, 1988. The West Coast rap group N.W.A. dropped their lead single off their debut album carrying the same name, "Straight Outta Compton". Giving way to a new sub-genre in hip-hop; gansta rap.
Despite a lack of radio play, the single was a huge success and helped launch West Coast Hip-Hop. 27 years after its release, the single would debut on the Billboard Hot 100 at #38 in September of 2015 due to the recent release of the film with the same name. The single would be certified platinum in June, 2016.
On this day, 1991, Qwest Records released the soundtrack to Boyz n the Hood.
On July 9, 1991, Quincy Jones released the soundtrack to John Singleton's coming-of-age film, Boyz n The Hood. By September, the album would be certified gold.
The soundtrack reached #12 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the R&B chart. The album would see two major hit singles. The first being by a then 14 year old Tevin Cambell titled "Just Ask Me To," which reached #88 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #9 on the R&B chart. The other single would be Tony Toni Tone's "Just Me And You", which would later be sampled on Chingy's single "Don't Worry".

On this day in 1983, the Brooklyn rap group Whodini released their self titled debut album. The group was one of the first to incorporate R&B into their music...
Although the album itself didn't see much success on the charts, it is still considered a bona-fide hip-hop classic. Whodini featured a few hit singles. "Magic's Wand" reached #45 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart and "The Haunted House of Rock" reached #55 on that same chart. The hit single "Magic's Wand" was featured in the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City's in-game radio station Wildstyle Pirate Radio in 2002. On this day in 1987, Eric B. & Rakim released their debut album Paid In Full. The first single off the album, "Eric B. Is President", was recorded in Marley Marl's home studio. The rest of the album would be recorded at the Power Play Studios in, NY.
Paid In Full peaked at #58 on the Billboard 200. The album spawned 5 singles, including the aforementioned "Eric B. Is President". By 1995 the album had sold over a million copies and was certified platinum. Rolling Stones magazine would rank Paid In Full #228 on their 2003, 500 Greatest Albums of All-Time list. It is considered one the benchmark albums of the golden age of hip-hop, influencing artists and producers to shape the future of hip-hop production.

Debuting at #3 on the Billboard 200, the critically acclaimed album featured a Grammy-nominated lead single "Shutterbug" which featured Cutty. While the concept wasn't anything new, in 2007 T.I. had beef with himself. A battle between business man and gangsta, T.I. vs T.I.P..
