On this day in 1990, MC Hammer released his third album Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em on Capitol. The album included production from Felton Pilate of Con Funk Shun, James Earley, Scott Folks, Hammer's brother Big Louis Burrell, and MC Hammer. It was saturated with classic R&B samples and is single-handedly responsible for bringing hip-hop culture and rap music to the mainstream. The album spawned the smash-hit singles "Pray," which sampled "When Doves Cry" by Prince; "Have You Seen Her," a cover of the Chi-Lites hit of the same name; "Yo!! Sweetness," which sampled from Barry White's hit "Your Sweetness Is My Weakness"; "Here Comes the Hammer," which sampled "Super Bad" by James Brown and the blockbuster hit "U Can't Touch This," which sampled "Super Freak" by Rick James and spent weeks on the chart and won two Grammys. Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em spent 108 weeks on the pop charts. It peaked at #1 and stayed on top of the Billboard 200 for 21 weeks. The album sold nearly 30 million copies worldwide and was certified double-diamond by the RIAA.
