On this day in 2001, Eminem and Elton John performed "Stan" at the 43rd Grammy Awards. In response to a protest by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation the day of the Awards for what some perceived as homophobic lyrics in Eminem's music, Em invited Elton John, an openly gay man, to perform with him on stage. Sir Elton John sang the Dido chorus for the song "Stan."

On this day in 1996, Jay-Z released his promotional single "Dead Presidents" on Roc-A-Fella/Priority. It was the first single released for his upcoming debut album Reasonable Doubt, although it did not appear on the album, instead an alternate version "Dead Presidents II" was featured. The track was produced by Ski and contained samples from Lonnie Liston Smith, A Tribe Called Quest, and Nas. It was certified gold by the RIAA in June 1996.

Lamar's controversial performance was a highlight of the evening. He led all artists by winning five Grammys, including best rap album. He was nominated for eleven total awards.
