On this day in 2006, James Brown died of congestive heart failure in Atlanta, Georgia. He was seventy-three years of age when he passed. The Godfather of Soul, whose career began in the late 1950s and until his death, influenced performers across many genres including soul, gospel, rock, blues, jazz, pop, and especially hip-hop. Michael Jackson was one of those performers. His music has been sampled nearly 12,000 times. The song "Funky Drummer" alone has been sampled in almost 1,500 songs. Mr. Brown sold millions of records in a career that lasted a half-century.
