On this day in 1989, De La Soul released their debut album 3 Feet High and Rising on Tommy Boy. The album was produced by the group and Prince Paul and at the time crafted a revolutionary style of sampled sounds and snippets never before heard in hip-hop. The group strayed away from the typical sampled artists like James Brown and P-Funk and introduced recordings from an unlikely group of artists like Johnny Cash, Otis Redding, Hall & Oates, the Turtles, and even a French language instructional record. The album also introduced the "skit" concept which is now common on rap albums. 3 Feet High and Rising spawned the hits and classics like "Me Myself and I," which reached #34 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop and Rap charts; "Potholes in My Lawn," which peaked at #22 on the Rap chart; "Plug Tunin'," "Buddy," which peaked at #18 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart; "Say No Go," which reached #11 on the Rap chart; "The Magic Number," which peaked at #18 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart; and "Eye Know." The group faced a lawsuit from the group the Turtles over an uncleared sample in the song "Transmitting Live from Mars." The album peaked at #24 on the Billboard 200. It was #1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart. It was certified platinum by the RIAA in 2000.
