The pioneering legend from New Jersey had released seven albums, appeared in over thirty films and television shows, and had won Grammy, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, and NAACP Image awards. The Queen had also been nominated for an Academy and Emmy award.

Damon Dash, Kareen "Biggs" Burke, and Jay Z sold Roc-A-Fella to Def Jam for $10 million. Jay Z was named president and CEO of Def Jam Records.

He is one of the pioneers of hip-hop DJing, cutting, scratching, and mixing. Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, becoming the first hip-hop act to be honored.
