On this day in 1984, Whodini released their sophomore album Escape on Jive. The album was produced by Larry Smith. It featured instrumentation from UK funkster Thomas Dolby. The album spawned a single and a couple classic hits: "Big Mouth," "Five Minutes of Funk," and "Friends," which reached #87 on the Billboard Hot 100. Escape was the first rap album to be certified platinum. It was the first rap album to reach the top forty on Billboard and peaked at #35 on the Album chart.
