On this day in 1988, Slick Rick released his debut solo album The Great Adventures of Slick Rick on Def Jam. The album was produced by Rick, the Bomb Squad, and the late Jam Master Jay. It was Slick Rick's first solo set after the release of a couple classic joints with Doug E. Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew. The album spawned three hits: "Teenage Love," "Hey Young World," and "Children's Story." The latter's beat would be sampled in Montell Jordan's classic R&B smash "This Is How We Do It." The album also featured cult classic cuts like "Treat Her Like A Prostitute," "Indian Girl (An Adult Story)," "Mona Lisa," and "The Ruler's Back." The Great Adventures of Slick Rick peaked at #31 on the Billboard 200. It reached #1 on the R&B chart. It was certified platinum by the RIAA. The album has been sampled over a hundred times in as many songs.
