On this day in Hip-Hop history, Ras Kass released his debut album Soul on Ice.
On this day in 1996, member of the supergroup Golden State Warriors, Ras Kass released his debut album Soul on Ice on Priority. The album was named after the 1968 book by Black Panther Eldridge Cleaver and was a hip-hop manifesto of the black struggle in the 1990s. Soul on Ice was produced by Ras Kass along with with Battlecat, Bird, Voodu, and others. The only guest featured on the album was Coolio on the joint "Drama." The debut spawned a few hit singles, "Miami Life," "Anything Goes," and the title track "Soul on Ice." Although not a single, "Nature of the Threat" gained huge attention because of its controversial political content. Soul on Ice reached #169 on the Billboard 200 and #35 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart.
