On this day in 1988, N.W.A. released their debut album Straight Outta Compton on Ruthless. The album was produced by Dr. Dre and DJ Yella and is considered the pioneering record for gangsta rap. It was the group's only album with member Ice Cube. Straight Outta Compton spawned the singles: "Gangsta Gangsta," which reached #91 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart and #11 on the Rap chart; "Express Yourself," which reached #45 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart and #2 on the Rap chart; and"Straight Outta Compton," which was the lead single and reached #38 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum. The album originally peaked at #37 on the Billboard Top LPs chart in 1989. It reached #4 on the Billboard 200 in 2015. The album was certified multi-platinum by the RIAA.
