On this day in 1991, LL Cool J released his hit single "Mama Said Knock You Out" from his album of the same name on Def Jam. The single was produced by Marley Marl and contained samples from James Brown, Chicago Gangsters, and Sly & the Family Stone and many others. "Mama Said Knock You Out" reached #1 on the Rap singles chart. It peaked at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #12 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart. The single won the Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance. It was certified gold by the RIAA. It's also included in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's "500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll" list.
