On this day in hip-hop history DJ Kool Herc invented Hip-Hop.
On this day in 1973, Clive Cambell, aka DJ Kool Herc, invented hip-hop at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx. Herc hosted a party in the rec room of his apartment building for his little sister dubbed the "Back to School Jam" and is seen by many as the birthplace and time of hip-hop. The party was the first time DJ Kool Herc showcased his new technique he named the "Merry Go Round." Kool Herc would isolate "the break" from records and loop them over and over or mix them together to create a new groove. During the set, friend Coke La Rock grabbed a microphone and called out friends' names and rapped improvised lyrics and chants over Kool Herc's continuous breakbeat loop. The first beat was made. The first rap was spit. Hip-Hop was born. Happy 45th Birthday! Also on this day... 2014 - DJ Mustard released his debut studio album 10 Summers on Republic.
